IMAGE ARCHIVE
Helpful hints 1: Searching the Archive
You must accept and agree to the terms and conditions of use on the 'Search
the Images' page to gain access to the collection.
Searching:
There are three routes for searching the archive.
| Route one - Keyword search |
When you type a keyword into the box, it will
search the whole archive and bring up any records that contain
that keyword.
You may also type more than one keyword into the box. In this
case you need to select either AND or OR in the box next to the
keyword.
Selecting AND will only find records that contain both of the
keywords. Selecting OR will find all records containing the first
keyword and all records containing the second keyword. |
Example:
Typing Scunthorpe AND Churches will find all the images of churches
in Scunthorpe.
Typing Scunthorpe OR Churches will find all images of Scunthorpe
and all images of churches, wherever they may be. |
| Route two - Subject search |
This method allows you to work your way up through
three levels of keywords, which may help you find something specific
more quickly.
In the first box, click on the arrow, and select a keyword. You
can now search for all the images relating to that keyword or
go to the next level.
At the next level, the arrow will give you a new selection of
keywords that will make your search more selective. Again, you
can click search, or go to level 3.
There may not be any keywords at level three for some categories.
|
Example:
Click on the arrow and scroll down to select ‘Transport’. Now
click on ‘search’ and it will produce a number of images (429
at the time this was written).
However, you may click on next level instead and then click on
the arrow to produce a different set of keywords (four of them).
For example, click on ‘Rail’ and then search. This will now produce
a smaller set of images (148), relating only to rail transport.
Or again, you can click on next level and a new set of keywords
will appear. Choose a relevant keyword to get a smaller and more
specific set of images. |
| Route three - Place search |
This method works exactly the same as route two,
but allows you to search for images relating to a location rather
than a subject. |
|
Results:
The results of your search will be displayed with up to eight 'thumbnail
images' on each page. Use the 'Next' and 'Previous' buttons to move back
and forth through the pages.
If you find you are having to scroll down to see all the images or text,
you may find that pressing the function key F11 on your keyboard will
make the pages fit on your screen better. Press the F11 key again to return
the pages to normal.
Viewing the Images:
Clicking on a thumbnail image will bring up a larger version, together
with all the information about that image. To enlarge the image still
further click on 'zoom'.
