Description:The hospital at Normanby Hall opened on the 19th November 1914 with accommodation for 25 patients. This increased over the war years until in March 1918 they could accommodate 75 including 8 emergency beds. Lady Sheffield was the Commandant with Mrs Jarvis acting as Quartermaster, Miss Hamilton Cox Assistant Quartermaster and Miss Denton as Matron. In addition to these there were several V.A.Ds, two Kitchen Maids, Nurses and Helpers. Dr. E. J. Tongue of Winterton was the Medical Officer until he joined the Navy when he was succeeded by Dr. S. A. H. Graydon Johnston of Scunthorpe. The Hospital was under the Northern Command and at first relieved patients from both Sheffield and Lincoln. The last Lincoln patients were discharged on the 10th November 1915 after which date it was affiliated to the 3rd Northern General Hospital, Sheffield only. The last patient was discharged from Normanby Hall in January 1919. 1,248 soldiers visited Normanby Hall during the First World War to recuperate.
